πŸ‘€ Brandon Kett
Podcast Biography
Canadian Afghanistan Veteran | Veterans’ Advocate | Mefloquine Awareness Advocate | Martial Artist

Brandon Kett is a Canadian Army Afghanistan veteran, veterans’ advocate, martial artist, and passionate supporter of veterans’ mental health and suicide prevention.

His advocacy journey began in 2014 when he started researching the potential long-term effects of mefloquine exposure after experiencing his own challenges while serving. In 2016, Brandon founded Canadian Mefloquine/Lariam Veteran Support, creating a community where veterans and their families could find information, connection, and support.

Brandon is committed to raising awareness, encouraging research, and ensuring veterans are listened to and supported when seeking answers about their experiences.

Martial arts has also played a major role in Brandon’s life. Beginning Judo in 1996 and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2006, he earned his BJJ Brown Belt in 2022 and continues working towards his Black Belt. For Brandon, martial arts represents discipline, resilience, humility, confidence, and the ability to remain composed under pressure.

πŸ‘€ Philip Scott Brooks,
Phillip is a former Royal Canadian Air Force Officer, Navigator, and Intelligence Officer.

After my medical release, I went on to become a lawyer, a senior banking executive, and a Veterans’ Advocate. My life was profoundly altered by mefloquine!

I was seriously injured during Gulf War deployment training in 1991 and I experienced multiple concussions and injuries, poisoning and tropical diseases during my operational flying career.

In 1996, while in law school, I was selected for one final mission as the Air Liaison for an early JTF-2 Special Operations mission to Africa and was ordered to take mefloquine. Following the cancellation of Operation CROCODILE, I suffered a severe neurological collapse that knocked him out of law school and ultimately contributed to the end of both my military career and my marriage.

In 1998 I was medically released in a state of confusion, aphasia and partial amnesia with no injury recognition nor support. What followed was not a single illness and recovery, but a decades-long cycle of rebuilding my l,ife only to suffer further unexplained neurological relapses.

I subsequently founded and ran my own international capital-markets advisory firm, yet each remarkable professional recovery was eventually interrupted by further neurological deterioration—years before I understood that my recurring symptoms were consistent with chronic quinoline neurotoxicity.

Eighteen years after my medical release, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) finally granted limited recognition of my service-related disabilities in 2016, beginning another difficult chapter of my life.

VAC however, terminated my income support in 2017 and I endured three years of profound disability and near homelessness. My benefits were reinstated arbitrarily during the pandemic—only to be terminated again in 2023.

Episode 91 of the Late Night Veterans Show with your Co founder Darren Edmundson πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§; and Host / CEO of Canada Reginald Argue πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

Where the talks are real, the banter’s real, and every veteran has a voice.

Guests:

πŸ‘€ Stephen Beardwood
A seventeen-year veteran who spent seven years as an airborne commando with one deployment.

Stephen's journey into writing began after a demanding and exhilarating expedition across the Northwest Territories by canoe, covering 400 kilometers in ten days with True Patriot Love. This experience, among many others you will read about in this book, deeply influenced his approach to life and writing.

In addition to his writing, Stephen is an accomplished instrumental guitarist, songwriter, and performer. He loves the outdoors and is passionate about military parachuting, advanced scuba diving, mountain climbing, skiing, and sailing.

Stephen’s commitment to service has extended beyond his military career. Alongside his brother, he runs Veterans House Alliance International, a charity dedicated to supporting the veteran community.

He lives in Gananoque, Ontario, where he can often be seen walking his cat, Mateo.

πŸ‘€ Dave Wiseman
A war story unlike any other, because the first battle began long before the battlefield.

Before Afghanistan, there was another war, one fought in silence.

In From the Sands of Kandahar, Canadian veteran David Wiseman delivers a raw and deeply human memoir of trauma, truth, and transformation.

From a childhood marked by violence and survival to the frontlines of Kandahar, Wiseman reveals how unhealed wounds of the past followed him into combat, and how the fight to come home would become the hardest mission of all.

Haunted by PTSD, mefloquine toxicity, and the betrayal of institutions meant to protect, Wiseman writes with unflinching honesty about the invisible injuries of service and the quiet violence of post-deployment life. But within the pain lies a story of awakening, of faith, therapy, and the sacred work of rebuilding.

Part war memoir, part survival guide, From the Sands of Kandahar is both a confession and a call to courage. Through vivid storytelling and lived experience, Wiseman shares the tools that helped him heal, offering hope for every veteran, survivor, and family still living in the aftermath of their own war.
